One of the things that I like to receive for the holidays (if I have a choice) are food baskets.

We encountered this wonderful little Italian restaurant as we made one stop for dinner before arriving at our daughter’s house prior to Christmas Eve. If only they had restaurants like these everywhere we went. Well, okay, maybe not. We’d be really rolly polly then.
I had the Mostaccioli. This oversized pasta meal was enough to feed three people. It had the right blend of a meat tomato sauce (perfect), cheese and a hint of basil.
What a treat! If you’re ever in the area, you need to stop at this restaurant. A five out of five rating.

It is not unusual for me to ask people what they would like as Christmas gifts, although I prefer spontaneity sometimes.
When a request for an Ugmonk t-shirt was received, I searched on the internet on where to locate them.
The company, located at www.ugmonk.com, has a mission statement that states they want to provide fresh simple graphics in their clothing line.

Gifts. Most people like to receive them. They come in various types — gifts of money, time, clothes, jewelry, etc.
The giver takes joy in watching the gift being opened. Their mind waits in anticipation to see if the gift will be warmly received or if the gift will just be set aside, never to be looked at again.
The Father in heaven did the same. He sent us the gift of His Son, Jesus, and watched to see how warmly He would be received.
Is He disappointed? Some days, yes. But other days He smiles as He watches His children accept Jesus into their lives. He watches as their lives are transformed from pain to joy, war to peace, embarassment to pride, hate to love.
The transformation happens quickly or slowly just like opening a gift. One person rips the wrapping up and pulls the gift out hurriedly. Another, slowly and painstakingly looks to see where the paper is taped, takes one piece of tape off at a time, removes the paper, folds it and sets it aside, looks at the box and checks for any tape, removes the tape, removes the lid from the box and then removes the gift.
Is there a right way or a wrong way? No. Both are right. And the Giver, God, takes joy in watching the transformation of His children.
It was not the usual Christmas day breakfast we’re used to having in Seattle. Moving to Minnesota has brought new events to satisfy the holidays.
My husband usually makes our breakfast and this year was no exception although we were at my sister’s Christmas morning.
A simple meal of scrambled eggs, homemade potatoes, turkey bacon, fresh fruit and bagels.
Simplicity is the way to go in life. Too many complicated things to tax the brain. If we could just enjoy what’s at our own tables, life would be good.
Pad Thai |
On the way to Chicago for the holidays, we stopped at a restaurant in Woodbury, MN called Noodles & Company. I ordered the Pad Thai which tasted different than what I’m used to in Seattle. The chicken pieces didn’t have much flavor. I don’t believe they cook them in the sauce. It also lacked the peanut flavor I was used to.
Our son had the Pesto Cavatappi. The noodles were bland. One could have boiled their noodles at home, added salt and it may have tasted the same.

Today was Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for us in Minnesota. Normally we wait for the “usual” time but since we will be in Chicago for those 2 days, we celebrated our small family’s Christmas early.
Christmas Eve finger foods |
These are fresh vegetarian avocado egg rolls which also have shredded carrot and cucumbers.
Inari Inari is a Japanese dish that has cooked rice (with vinegar) and includes sliced carrots and cucumbers. It is held together in a tofu wrap. Very delicious. |
Pineapple, orange slices, pickled herring, green and black olives accompany the mint and almond M&M’s. This is the first year we’ve tried the new M&M’s.
Smoked salmon, crackers and edam cheese finish off the list of finger foods.
As I was listening to the radio on TV, the song Grown Up Christmas List started to play. There are many versions of it but the one that was playing was by Monica.
The words were soothing to me. (I’ve added a link in case you want to download the song to hear it.)
Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies
Well, I’m all grown up now
Can you still help somehow
I’m not a child but my heart still can dream
So here’s my lifelong wish
My grown up Christmas list
Not for myself
But for a world in need
(Refrain) No more lives torn apart
That wars will never start
And time will heal all hearts
And every man would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown up Christmas list
May kindness rule our lives
Not just the strong survive
Sweet tears for all the thousand years gone by
This is the world I pray
We will all share some day
Help me begin by reaching out my hand.
(Refrain)
Why is this illusion called the innocence of youth?
Maybe only in the blind belief
Can we ever find the truth
(Refrain)
This is my grown up Christmas list

There are many marriage vows. Â Some are traditional and some are written by the bride and groom. Â One of the ones I recently saw included the words “I will serve you with tenderness and respect.”
