The San Pedro Cafe

Breakfast at the San Pedro Cafe was delightful.

We arrived a little after the restaurant opened at 8:00 a.m.  There are both tables and booths.

Our party had 3 entrees the Hammock Breakfast, Pedro’s French Toast and the Vegetable Frittata.  All entrees were heartily eaten.

I’d recommend this place for breakfast.  The food, atmosphere and service were all good.

House Hunting in Minnesota

Having lived in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, I’ve seen many odd things.

And what a surprise to see a Fremont-like atmosphere in Stillwater, Minnesota.  This is the two-door gate to the house we entered.

The ceiling was white and had a strange half-moon texture.

These owners are very “differented” thinking.  In the summer, you can sit outside on one of these two chairs and enjoy the chandelier lighting.  Unique indeed.

This is not a home we’re considering purchasing as it needs a lot of work.  But the sellers are doing their best to get it ready for the right buyer.

Stillwater, Minnesota

We were scheduled to view a home on 10 acres in Stillwater, Minnesota today.

The driveway was very long, snowy, and the area was treed.  Very beautiful.

When we first pulled up to the property, the first thing I noticed was the beautiful wood garage doors.

When our realtor unlocked the front door, we were greeted by a man — the owner?  Although our realtor had the security code that was given to her by the owner, the man told her he had canceled the appointment.

We were able to sneak a peek at the living room and saw floor to ceiling windows which had a beautiful view.

Not sure why the seller wouldn’t let us walk through the house.  Perhaps they were distracted by the pregame events of the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears game.

This home is not far from downtown Hudson.

We are considering buying this house however, in doing some research, we found that there was contamination in the well water a few years ago.  The house has a special filter and the company that was responsible for the contamination pays yearly to have the water checked.

Since I am sensitive to chemicals, fragrances, etc. I am a little hesitant about making an offer without having more information on the water situation.
It’s very cozy inside.  The livingroom is not very large but will fit a loveseat and 2 chairs.  The dining room has ample space for our dining set.  There is a beautiful sun room that overlooks the property.
The kitchen does not have oak cabinets.  Thankfully!  Not sure what the cabinets are made out of, maybe cherry?
There are 3 bedrooms upstairs along with 2 full baths and a half bath on the main floor.  Not sure where any of our elderly friends might sleep unless they go upstairs.
The floor planks on the main level are 3 inch or so wide.  Very pretty.
The basement is not completed yet but is framed for a bedroom, bathroom and family room.
Very nice home on a very beautiful lot.

Oak Trees and Isaiah 1

You will be like an oak with fading leaves.  Like a garden without water.  Isaiah 1:30, 31

The people were all dried up.

What happens to us as people when we go through rituals without them having much meaning any more?  We’re like robots garnering no satisfaction in what we’re doing.

Stop bringing meaningless offerings.  Isaiah 1:13

Motives.  Do we do things to appease people or because we really enjoy doing them?

The term “going through the motions” is what God is talking about.

The leaders of that day, just like us today, did things only because that’s what they thought God wanted them to do.  Kill a lamb.  Check.  Go to church.  Check.  Give an offering.  Check.

They had lost their passion for God.  Much like we lose our passion in relationships — at work, at home,  out in society.

After awhile, we become like oaks with fading leaves.

Are we still standing?  Yes.  But we aren’t living.  Our leaves slowly die and fall to the ground.  Moments in time that can’t be recovered.

They were hungry and thirsty and their lives ebbed away.
Psalm 107: 5

We are not left hopeless and helpless though.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
Psalm 107:6

There’s always hope.  There’s always help.  There’s always — God.

The Sabbath

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said “Let there be light” and there was light.  God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.  God called the “light” day and the dark He called “night.”
And there was evening and there was morning – the first day.
Genesis 1:1-5

And that’s how it all started.  In the beginning.  From sundown to sundown.

Fort DeSoto, Courtesy of William Earnhardt

By the seventh day, God had finished all the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.  Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.
Genesis 2:2-3

And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1

Potatoes

I decided to make potato soup.

I had so many leftover red potatoes from a big bag that we had bought and they were starting to look — old.  I had to use them for something.  The skins were drying out and some of them were starting to grow roots.  Ugghh!

Most of the potatoes were small and had to be peeled.  And I have small hands so it made it a little hard to do.

As I was peeling the potatoes, a thought came to me.

Here I am trying to use potatoes that would probably have been thrown out by someone else.  Thought of as useless, the trash would have taken them away easily.

Isn’t that how it is sometimes when people get older?

We think they don’t have anything of value left in them because they look old and wrinkly.  Yet when you peel away the outer skin of their humanity, inside is a beautiful human being.  All polished and ready to talk and share and do whatever they can do for you.

Yes, they are sometimes hard to work with because they are, as some say, “set in their ways.”  And people will toss them away because of that, not wanting to peel away their outer being.  It does take time.

But the beauty that can be found inside is worth every minute of patience and time that it takes.

I have found on so many occasions that just because the body is aging on the outside does not mean that the emotions on the inside have also aged.  They are still vibrant in their thinking and would also be so in their life if given a chance.

They’re just waiting for someone to come and peel them.

Here are faces of some potatoes I know who have been peeled and found to be beautiful.

Funny, that’s how Jesus views us.  Looking past the outer skin, he takes our hand and sees the beauty that lies within.

Minnesota Living

Moving to Minnesota from Seattle, Washington comes with a few challenges.

Since all of our possessions are in storage in Seattle until we buy a house, we are renting an apartment including the furniture, linens and kitchenware.

Sounds simple enough.

Everything looked so pretty when we entered the apartment the first day.  Furniture in place, kitchen items in place, towels in the bathroom.  Yes, pretty simple.

Coming from a large house to a 2 bedroom apartment, we received 4 of everything.  Four plates, four bowls, four glasses, four spoons, four forks, etc.  (We bought the 4 mugs to match.)  laughs

We go through 4 things pretty quickly.

Then there’s the quality of the things that we rent.  The sharpest knife doesn’t cut very well, the bowls are too small (or perhaps we eat too much?), the cheese grater doesn’t grate very well unless you count the grating it does on my nerves.

I long for my possessions in the land of Seattle much like the Israelites longed for the things they left behind in the land of Egypt when they were called by God to leave it.

I’m sometimes tempted to go out and buy a blender, a sharp knife, more dishes, etc.  But then, we’d have double everything when our possessions from Seattle arrive in HOPEFULLY the next month.

No — leading a simple life is not too bad.  I am really blessed just to have food on our table and clothes on our back.

So for now – I am thankful.  Even if a little agitated.
