Hunan Palace Chinese Restaurant

My husband recently found a site, restaurant.com, where you can print coupons for quite a bit off at restaurants. With coupon in hand, we set out to find an Italian restaurant by the name of Pino’s. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed on the day we went.

So, we decided to walk over to the Hunan Palace Chinese Restaurant (which was in the same strip mall) that the sign said had a dinner buffet. It had just opened for dinner and we were seated right away when we entered.  But there was no food in the buffet trays. Odd, huh?

We were offered drinks and then we waited. About 15 minutes later the “cook” brought trays of food out. Everyone in the restaurant waited to be told it was okay to head over to the buffet line but no one directed us. Finally a couple behind us got up, took plates and started the process.

It was a little strange — almost as if the waiter didn’t know what to do or perhaps we were the ones who should have known.

The food was piping hot and taste-wise it was average Chinese food. My husband told me that I have been spoiled by living in Seattle for so long as the food there is so diverse and delicious. In Minnesota, we haven’t found too many outstanding restaurants yet. They’re mainly “okay.”

I didn’t take any pictures of the food as the lighting wasn’t that great.

However, on my way to pay the cashier for the meal, I noticed this statue on the counter.

Buddha

I asked the cashier why there were pennies under the statue and he told me that it was for good luck. Hmmm … must be similar to when people throw pennies into a fountain for luck.

The buddha didn’t give me much luck though (although I didn’t leave any coins) as I walked out without my credit card and had to go back to retrieve it.

Oh well …

Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes

These blueberry buttermilk pancakes have become my Sabbath (Saturday) morning go-to breakfast.  I’ve made this recipe several times in the past few months. The pancakes always come out light, fluffy and they can be made with apples, blueberries or anything else you want to add to them — even nothing at all.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons yellow cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons (packed) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted, plus a little more for the griddle

Directions

  1. Combine the flour, cornmeal, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium sized bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, add the buttermilk, yogurt and egg and blend them together.
  3. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until everything is blended together. It will still be lumpy but avoid over-mixing it.
  4. Add the melted butter to the mixture.
  5. Add whatever else you’d like to the pancakes such as blueberries, bananas, nuts, etc. then fold them into the pancakes.
  6. On a heated nonstick griddle over medium heat, spread a thin coating of butter and let it melt.
  7. Drop approximately 1/3 cup of the batter on the griddle per pancake.
  8. Cook the pancakes until they are brown on the bottom and bubbles form on top (about 4 minutes but check to make sure).
  9. Turn the pancakes over and cook on the other side.

As the pancakes are ready, I place them in a casserole dish and put them in the oven (set to warm) until it’s time for all to eat.

The really nice thing about these pancakes is that you can serve them with or without syrup as they are delicious either way.

Yum!

I found this recipe at the strangest place — a bed and breakfast called the Azalea Inn & Gardens. Click here to go to their website.

Murmuring

Murmur: to make a low or indistinct sound, especially continuously.

A story is told about a people, called the Israelites, who left Egypt in search of a new promised land. Led by a man named Moses, they wandered in the wilderness and God gave them food to eat which they called “… manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.” (Exodus 16:31)

But they weren’t happy with what God had given them. Their memory went back to the land where they came from and they complained and murmured.

“Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic.” Numbers 11:5

This wasn’t the first time they complained and it wouldn’t be the last and God was not pleased with them. After all, He promised to take care of them and He was — just not the way they thought He should be.

We all can relate to what’s happening here. When my boys were little I would make decisions for them which sometimes they didn’t like. So they complained and sometimes murmured. “What’s that you say?” I would ask them. “Nothing.” Murmuring didn’t usually get them what they wanted.

Because the Israelites didn’t think God was listening they took their complaints to Moses and Moses took their complaints to God as they continued to murmur.

Sometimes we give in to our children or other people and this is what God did. The people wanted flesh to eat — none of this bread-like food that appeared that they had to go out and gather. So, God gave them quail.

Quail

(I don’t know what quail, back in the day, looked like. The picture above is of a quail I took while visiting Seattle recently.)

“And there went forth a wind from the LORD and brought quails from the sea …” Numbers 11:31

“And the people stood up all that day and all that night and all the next day and they gathered the quails …” Numbers 11:32

They ate and ate and ate until death for some of them.

There are so many lessons we can glean from this story but today while reading this story my mind thought about one word: lusting. God was providing everything they needed and they were lusting for something else. Their complaint was “… there is nothing at all besides this manna before our eyes.” Numbers 11:6

Do I lust for what I don’t have? We normally think of the word lust in sexual terms but it has other meanings such as: desire, inclination or wish.

It’s so easy to look back on life and think that 20 years ago life was easier, more comfortable, less stressful. But that’s only because my memory has forgotten what reality was like back then. Were there melons, cucumbers, onions and garlic (speaking metaphorically) back in the day? Absolutely! But I have new experiences now.

I need to live in this moment — not yesterday, not desiring tomorrow. I may be dead tomorrow!

God knows what’s best for me. And when I crave something else in life I need to listen to Him and “eat” what He supplies.

After all, He’s the Creator so shouldn’t He know what’s best?

Trader Joe’s Night

Today was a lazy day for me. I took my husband to work, went to Dunn Brothers and had a hot chocolate and lemon yogurt muffin, ran some errands, came home and watered the plants then re-arranged our bedroom furniture.

Pretty boring, huh?

It’s no surprise that I had also pre-planned to have a lazy dinner. I went to Trader Joe’s earlier in the week, picked up some noodles, teriyaki sauce, tofu for frying and a container of already chopped vegetables. Pretty lazy. And as the day wore on I totally forgot that I had to prepare the tofu for dinner so when it was time to prep the food the tofu was not ready. Oh well …

The meal came out great! Well, if you ask me. My husband thought the rice noodles (a new kind for us) were too slimy. I just slurped them up. (laughing)

Here’s what I bought at Trader Joe’s:

Korean Rice Noodles
Island Soyaki Sauce

So simple and healthy. I probably could have added more veggies to the pot but for the lazy day that I had.

Stir Fry Dinner

And now I’m winding down and waiting for my Sabbath rest to begin.

Looking up at the clouds in the sky it seems they always have strange formations when we get warm weather (like today). There’s a beauty in them that captures my eyes every time.

The Belwin Conservancy

Almost two years ago, we were looking at a house that was for sale and beyond the backyard fence was the Belwin Conservancy which purportedly had wild bison.  At the time, we didn’t see any wildlife but I knew that I didn’t want bison living so close to me. I had visions of them going crazy and crashing into our house (not to mention the possibility of the smell that we might get when the wind shifted our way). So — the “Bison” house was passed on.

Recently we took a drive to the Belwin Conservancy to see if bison actually existed. We weren’t disappointed.

The sign to the Belwin Conservancy is clearly marked and you can drive right through the gate

The Belwin Conservancy

There are two observation decks at the Conservancy.  The first one is a 6 foot accessible deck that has a ramp. You can see bison from this distance.

The Belwin Conservancy Observation Deck

Once you pass this observation deck there is a path to a second 20 foot deck. While walking to the second deck there were quite a few flies and a whiff of a not-so-pleasant smell. I take it the bison aren’t litter trained. (laughing)

Second observation deck

The second deck does not have a ramp so we headed up the stairs to observe the wild bison. And boy were they out today!

Bison

It appeared that one seemed to be staring at me. I think we made a “connection.” Perhaps he/she was as curious about me as I was about him, uh, her?

Minnesota Bison

Hmmm … another one looking my way …

Minnesota Bison
Minnesota Bison

They are beautiful creatures.

The area where the bison live has a beautiful marshland and high up in the sky across the blue Minnesota sky you could see a hot air balloon. I wonder what it would be like to go on one of these rides?

Marshland

The Belwin Conservancy observation decks are located in Afton, Minnesota and are open when bison are present which they say is from June through October. For additional information please go to their website by clicking here.

Lake of the Isles

Recently we had friends visit us from Seattle and I took them for a walk at a highly rated  lake in Minneapolis called Lake of the Isles.  It was a beautiful sunny day when we went.

The neighborhood is in an established part of Minneapolis and the houses are large, stately and very well maintained.  A quick look at real estate in this neighborhood shows that houses cost up to $6 million dollars.  There are some that are in the half million dollar range … either way, too expensive for me.

The lake is connected to Cedar Lake and Lake Calhoun and has 2.86 miles of shoreline.

Mosquito Death in Minnesota

The first West Nile Virus death this year in Minnesota occurred a couple of days ago. Click here to read the article.

And just yesterday morning my mother was admonishing me about working in our 1/2 acre that is mostly brush and trees as mosquitoes can be present. She reminded me of the West Nile Virus that is taking people’s lives as mosquitoes transmit their disease to humans. Am I careful? Yes, I am, although even when I’m careful by using DEET on all exposed parts of my body, the mosquitoes sometimes find one small spot that I miss. They are able to find me by the smell of carbon dioxide that I emit when I breathe. Well, I do have to breathe …

Searching the internet for something more “natural” to put on my body that doesn’t have side effects, I came upon an idea that I thought I’d try.  Garlic.  Apparently mosquitoes don’t like the smell of garlic so I have been making a paste to rub on my body.

Garlic Mosquito Repellant

I have been using my homemade potion for a couple of weeks and it works just as well as DEET does. I still spray DEET on the bottom of my pants and shoes to keep away any tics that might be in the area (although we have only seen one this year). Have I gotten bitten using the garlic? Yes. I was bitten twice yesterday in places where I did not rub the garlic on my body. I don’t know if it matters whether you use fresh garlic or ground garlic but I have tried both and they have the same effect although the ground garlic is less trouble to use.

Some people say the garlic doesn’t work for them and they use Skin So Soft by Avon. And, as you can imagine, there are a lot more suggestions out there. If I find something that works (that’s not going to kill me) then I’ll stick with it until it stops working. This solution isn’t for everyone and one day the only thing that may work against mosquitoes is a chemical solution. That’s when I might have to move to a less buggy part of the United States.

My New Saw

Another cool day in Minnesota. For me that means lots of YARD WORK. I hired the neighbor boy to come help move the woodpile from the back of the property to the side of the property so it will be easier to access when winter comes. I can’t wait to use the fireplace again. It’s so pretty!

While the woodpile was being taken care of, I went to the garage and took out my new 21 inch Friskars Bow Pruning Saw that I purchased last evening at Home Depot.

Fiskars Bow Pruning Saw

Notice the orange warning “Aggressive Cuts.” I certainly hope so as I can’t cut a large branch with a “non aggressive” cut.

Bow Saw

This bow saw cut magnificently! The cuts were sharp and clean and it didn’t take me long to cut up a few branches. I think I may have even grown a muscle.  hahahaha

Bow Saw Blade

The blade is replaceable which is really good as we have quite a few branches that fall throughout the year and the pruner just doesn’t work as well. All this for less than $10! I literally felt giddy as I left Home Depot with my new tool.

Maybe I should buy some flannel shirts so I can look like a real lumber, uh, woman.  haha

The Agave Kitchen

It’s been awhile since we returned to the Agave Kitchen in Hudson, Wisconsin although I’m not sure why. Their food is delicious and we always leave feeling quite satisfied with the portion sizes, the service and the quality of the food.

This time we tried two new entrees — chicken tenders with french fries and barbecue chicken with vegetables. Pretty good!

Chicken Tenders with French Fries
Barbecue Chicken

Unfortunately, when I searched Google to read the reviews on the Agave Kitchen, it did not have good reviews. One of the problems appears to be the wait time when the restaurant is busy. Since we usually go in the evenings, we have never had the problem of having to wait nor of our food getting to us cold.

I was not able to find their website either as it appears to be redirected elsewhere — not sure what’s going on with that.

It’s always “buyer beware.”  Too bad the restaurant can’t seem to be more consistent with everyone.

The Spider

With cooler Minnesota weather, I can now sit in the screened-in porch and enjoy fresh air, wildlife and the quietness that surrounds us.

As I lay back on my chair, content as a bee with nectar in its mouth, I looked up at the ceiling and saw it.  “It” was a large black spider measuring 3-4 inches from the tip of one leg to the tip of its other leg. Instead of getting up and hooting and hollering, I watched as it just sat there as if it were dead. I knew better though — it was alive and would eventually be discontent sitting motionless.

Spider

My husband was sitting directly across from me unaware of the danger in the room. Well, okay, it COULD be dangerous. I cautiously rose from my chair and circled to the other side of the room where I informed him of what lay overhead.

Now it was time to investigate how much danger we were in. With iPad in hand, I scoured the internet for images of this newfound creature who had made its way into our peaceful abode.

I immediately eliminated the black widow and brown recluse spiders (both poisonous) from my list. At first I thought it might be an orb weaver and had it been that species I would have been delighted as they eat mosquitoes. Upon further examination (magnifying the images I was comparing) it does not appear to be an orb weaver.

Perhaps a grass spider? Similar but the grass spider only grows to one inch.

So I am left to ponder what this spider is.  Any arachnoid experts out there?

As I left the porch to make dinner, my husband took a broom and swatted the spider off the ceiling then chased it out the door.  Yeah! for a husband who handles the icky things in life for me.

Question: What do you do with the spiders in your house? Do you kill them or do you take them outdoors so they can die naturally?
